Volunteer Opportunities at New Life Community:

For Our Residents

Apartment Set-Up Assistants
We need individuals and/or groups who can set up an apartment before a new family moves into it. Our apartments have a kitchen, living room, dining room, 1-3 bedrooms and a bathroom. The set-up is usually done once a month at the end of the month.

Donation Room Assistants
These individuals or groups are needed to organize the clothing in our donation room. Duties include sorting through clothes donated to NLC and selecting business appropriate items for use by our residents. These items then need to be put on racks in the Donation Room.

Gardeners
New Life Community is located in a remodeled elementary school. Due to the commitment of a small number of volunteers, the building is proud of its well-kept gardens. Our volunteers would love additional assistance and invite all who love gardening, or who think they may love gardening, to come and tend our gardens.

Transportation/Furniture Assistants
Residents stay at New Life Community for four months, after which they move into their own housing. Often our graduates need furniture. Volunteers are needed to find furniture from donors and to help move that furniture to the graduates' new homes. This is a great position for those who love garage sales!

Handymen
If you like to putter around the house and fix things, we have 14 apartments and our maintenance technician needs help with plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc., to maintain our apartments.

For Our Job Training Program

Professional Development and Job Search Instructors
Residents receive training in job search and job readiness skills, money management and budgeting, decision making, time management and academics. We are looking for volunteers who can help tutor our residents in any of these areas.

For Our Children

Evening Childcare
On Tuesday or Thursday evening, we need volunteers to tend to the safety and recreational needs of a small group of children who may range in age from birth to 13 years, while their parents attend an hour class on site.

Activities Instructors
We are looking for volunteers who can provide our children with enriching experiences such as creative movement, music, literacy and reading activities, and so on. We have children who range in age from birth to 13 years and programs should be adaptable for a wide range of age groups.

One-Time Annual Events

Luau Block Party
Every August, New Life Community hosts a block party for the residents and graduates of the building as well as the residents of E. 150th and E. 152nd Streets. The theme is a Hawaiian Luau and there is plenty of food, games, music and arts and crafts. We need volunteers to host the various activities and to help provide the food.

Holiday Store
Every December, New Life Community receives donations of toys and offers its residents and graduates the opportunity to pick out gifts for their children. The Holiday Store remains open for a week. We need volunteers to help set up and break down the “store” as well as to replenish it throughout the week.

Mother’s Day Appreciation Brunch
In May, New Life Community celebrates our residents and graduates as mothers, by giving them special attention, including a brunch in their honor. We need volunteers to assist with the brunch.
